How to Calculate CGPA VTU?

The method for calculating CGPA at VTU depends on the scheme you’re following. In simple words, it refers to the year you entered the program.

Formula

CGPA =
∑(Ci×Gi) ∑Ci

Where:

  • Ci is the credit assigned to the course.
  • Gi is the grade point secured in the course.
  • ∑(Ci × Gi) is the sum of the products of the credits and the grade points for all the courses.
  • ∑Ci is the sum of the credits for all the courses.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the formula:

  1. Identify Credits (C) and Grade Points (G) for Each Course:
    • Each course has a certain number of credits assigned to it.
    • Each grade you receive is converted to a grade point, typically on a 10-point scale (e.g., S = 10, A = 9, B = 8, etc.).
  2. Multiply Credits by Grade Points:
    • For each course, multiply the number of credits by the grade points received.
  3. Sum of All (C × G):
    • Add up all the results from the previous step. This gives the total weighted grade points.
  4. Sum of All Credits:
    • Add up all the credits for the courses you have taken.
  5. Calculate CGPA:
    • Divide the total weighted grade points by the total number of credits.

Example

You’re under the 2018 scheme and completed your first semester at VTU. Here’s an example to calculate CGPA:

SubjectCredits(Ci)GradeGrade Points(Gi)Ci x Gi
Mathematics4A936
Physics3B+3.510.5
Chemistry3B39
English2C+2.55

Now,

  1. Total Credit Points: (excluding failing grades) = 36 + 10.5 + 9 + 5 = 60.5
  2. Total Credits: (excluding failing grades) = 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 12
  3. Calculate CGPA
    • CGPA = Total Credit Points / Total Credits
    • CGPA = 60.5 / 12 = 5.04

How to Calculate SGPA VTU?

VTU SGPA to percentage calculation is pretty simple. You can use the following formula.

Formula

SGPA =
Σ(Subject Credits * Grade Points) Σ(Subject Credits)

Example

Let’s say you have the following subjects in a single semester:

SubjectCreditsGradeGrade PointsCredit Points
History4A416
Physics3B+3.510.5
Chemistry3B311
English2C+2.55
  • Total Credit Points: 16 + 10.5 + 11 + 5 = 42.5
  • Total Credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 12
  • SGPA = 42.5 / 12 = 3.54

At Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), the CGPA is calculated using the formula:

CGPA=∑(Ci×Gi) / ∑Ci

Where Ci is the number of credits for a course and Gi is the grade point for that course. To calculate CGPA, multiply the credits by the grade points for each course, sum all the weighted grade points, then divide by the total credits.
